How Do Cam Sites Work?
Quick answer
Cam sites run on a freemium model: the broadcast is free to watch, and the platform earns when viewers buy an internal currency and spend it. Tokens, credits or Gold are bought in packages, spent on tips and private shows, and split between the performer and the platform. The two revenue models in use are collective tipping in a public room and per-minute billing for a private one.

Free to watch, paid to participate
The model every large cam platform runs on is freemium, and understanding it explains most of what these sites do.
Access costs nothing. Registration is free, entering a room is free, and on most platforms you can watch a public broadcast for as long as you like without spending anything. What costs money is participating: tipping, requesting something, or taking a performer into a private show.
That is a deliberate trade. A viewer who never spends costs the platform bandwidth and little else, and in exchange the platform gets a busy room — and a busy room is what makes the paying viewers spend, because tipping in an empty room is a very different experience from tipping in a crowded one. The free audience is not tolerated overhead. It is part of the product.
The internal currency, and why platforms use one
You do not pay a cam site in cash at the moment you act. You buy an internal currency in packages up front and then spend it inside the site.
| Unit | Platforms that use it | How it is sold |
|---|---|---|
| Tokens | Chaturbate, Stripchat, BongaCams, MyFreeCams, Cam4 | Fixed packages, cheaper per unit as the package grows |
| Credits | LiveJasmin | Fixed packages, spent per minute of show |
| Gold | Jerkmate | Fixed packages, spent per minute of show |
Three things follow from that design, and all three favour the platform.
The purchase decision happens once, at the package, and is then detached from every individual spend. Tipping 50 tokens does not feel like spending money in the way that entering a card number would.
The unit is small enough to price anything, which lets a performer put a number on a tip, a request or a minute without dealing in fractions of a currency.
And the platform sets the rate. Packages get cheaper per unit as they get larger, which is a straightforward volume incentive to buy more than you plan to spend. Actual figures per platform live on the pricing pages — Chaturbate token prices and LiveJasmin pricing are the two clearest contrasts — rather than here, because they change, and a guide is the wrong place to keep them current.
The two revenue models
Underneath the currency there are only two ways a cam site turns an audience into money, and which one a platform is built around changes the viewing experience more than anything else about it.
Collective tipping. The room is public, the performer sets a goal, and everyone watching can contribute towards it. Many viewers each pay a little, and the resulting show is shared by the whole room. This is the model Chaturbate was built on, and it is why its public rooms are the main event rather than a waiting area. Our Chaturbate review covers how that plays out in practice.
Per-minute billing. The show is one-to-one, the rate is published per minute, and a meter runs for as long as the show lasts. One viewer pays for one show. LiveJasmin is the clearest example in our set: its free chat works as a preview and the paid private is the product, which is precisely why it is not listed in our free cam sites hub.
Most platforms run both, weighted differently. Stripchat is the most balanced of the ones we cover — public tipping rooms and per-minute privates side by side — and the Stripchat review goes into how the two interact there.
Who gets paid, and how the split works
Every platform keeps a percentage of what is spent in it. The performer receives the rest, converted back into money at a rate the platform sets, and paid out on the platform’s schedule.
What the platform charges for is real: hosting live video at scale, processing adult payments that many processors will not touch, running identity and age verification on its performers, and supplying the audience in the first place. That does not make any particular split generous, and the figures are not uniform across the sector.
Where a platform publishes what a performer earns per token, we record it as data on that platform’s own pages rather than as prose here. A general guide is the wrong place to print a number that changes.
Why this shapes what you see on screen
Once the model is clear, most of the behaviour on a cam site stops looking arbitrary.
Goal bars, countdowns and tip menus exist because a collective-tipping room needs a visible target to coordinate a crowd around. Heavy prompting towards a private show appears on platforms whose revenue is per-minute rather than per-tip — Jerkmate builds its entire entry flow around it, as the Jerkmate review sets out. Community features, follower counts and ranking systems exist because a returning viewer is worth far more than a passing one, which is the whole premise of MyFreeCams and its review.
None of this is hidden, and none of it is unique to one platform. It is the same economics arranged differently, which is what our ranking of the best cam sites is comparing.

Frequently asked questions
How do cam sites make money if watching is free?
They sell an internal currency. Watching costs nothing, but tips, private shows and most extras are paid for in tokens, credits or Gold that you buy up front in packages. The platform keeps a share of everything spent and passes the rest to the performer, so a room full of non-paying viewers costs the platform little while a single paying one covers many of them.
What are cam site tokens and why not just use money?
Tokens are a prepaid internal currency you buy in packages and spend inside the site. Platforms use them because they let a performer price a tip or a minute in small units, because the buying decision happens once at the package rather than at every tip, and because the platform sets the exchange rate itself. LiveJasmin calls its unit credits and Jerkmate calls its unit Gold; the mechanism is the same.
What is the difference between public tipping and per-minute billing?
In a tipping model the room is free and viewers contribute towards a shared goal, so many people pay a little and everyone sees the same show. In a per-minute model the show is one-to-one and the meter runs for as long as it lasts, so one person pays for one show. Chaturbate is built around the first, LiveJasmin around the second, and Stripchat runs both side by side.
How much of a tip does the model actually receive?
A share of it, set by the platform and not by the viewer. Every cam site keeps a percentage of what is spent in exchange for hosting, payment processing and traffic, and pays out the rest on its own schedule. Where a platform publishes its per-token payout figure we record it on that platform's own pricing page rather than in a general guide, because it changes.
Why do free rooms exist at all?
Because they are the discovery surface and the main acquisition channel. A free public room lets a performer be found by people who have not spent anything yet, and lets a viewer judge before paying. Platforms that shrink free chat down to a preview, as LiveJasmin does, are making the opposite trade: fewer casual viewers, a larger share of them converting.
Do cam sites charge a subscription?
Not for access. None of the seven platforms we compare put entry behind a monthly fee, and the base account is free on all of them. Some sell optional premium memberships that add features, but the core model is prepaid currency spent per action, not a recurring charge for the right to watch.
